ADELAIDE NOW

TIM LLOYD - ADELAIDE CABARET FESTIVAL 2008

June 12, 2008 10:00am

THE 3 Dolls live up to the name of their show, Freudian Slips. The singers and entertainers turn on a tightly scripted comedy and song routine that would make Freud slip in his grave.

As they say: “If it’s not one thing it's your mother.” The curvy Lissy, cute Charlotte and lissom Bronwyn come out literally in slips and cowboy boots, wielding continental cucumbers in unmistakeably phallic ways.

They have Andrews Sisters hairstyles and perform Andrews Sisters harmony, although the Andrews Sisters never sang Welcome Your Perversity.

There is a great band, particularly percussion from Rob Eyers, as the girls segue into female country music with a vengeance.

Their original songs are full of double entendres and disingenuous love and old-fashioned pashing on the dance floor. It’s warm and enthusiastic entertainment.

Freudian cowgirl cabaret

Apply Freudian analysis to female country music with lashings of tongue in cheek and you have The Dolls in Freudian Slips, three smart women with great voices, a gift for songwriting and a show that comes close to tearing the house down.

No opportunity for a witty lyric or wordplay is allowed to sneak past the comic sensibilities of Lissy Elliott, Bronwyn Gell and Charlotte Mudge, as they round up the audience like musical cowgirls trying to bring the herd in before lunchtime.

The occasional lapse into shouting could be reined in, but there's some lovely choreography from director Rachael Kirkham, and the driving backing band of drummer Rob Eyers, double bassist Peter Nixon and guitarist David Rhodes is a bar room knockout.

“The Dolls’ (Lissy Elliot, Bronwyn Gell and Charlotte Mudge) take command of the stage from the moment they enter. This show is both cleverly scripted, with seamless segues into songs, and musically flawless. Awesome harmonies and arrangements, with amusing interludes and quotes from well-known TV themes thrown in, “the Dolls” delighted the audience with their beautifully contrasting, yet complimenting voices. Supported by Rob Eyers (drums), Peter Nixon (double bass) and David Rhodes (guitars), their songs are lyrically clever, and musically entertaining. [Most of the songs are available on their debut CD, “If I Were A Much Better Wife”]. With effective lighting by Sarah Strong-Law, sound by Glenn Hill and brilliantly directed by Rachael Kirkham (no amount of adjectives adequately covers this woman’s supreme talent!!), this is a superb, laugh-a-minute experience. If you’re after a show that is enormously fun, make sure you don’t miss “The Dolls in Freudian Slips”..yee-haw!

Fringe - The Dolls
Adelaide band "The Dolls" have gone psycho and taken their toe-tappin', knee slappin', foot-stompin' brand of country music to the analyst's couch for their cabaret-style Fringe show.
And for people searching for a bit of fun and then some in their life - The Doll's in Freudian Slips is perfect therapy. The hour-long, intense treatment consists of The Dolls - Charlotte Mudge 'the ego', Lissy Elliott 'the id' and Bronwyn Gell ' the superego' - strutting their stuff in gorgeous slips and belting out an original song list offering blues, rockabilly and a dollop of gospel, supported by the band - Rob Eyers, Peter Nixon and David Rhodes - lurking in the corner. The audience quickly warmed to the gals who also clearly have fun on stage. The Dolls in Freudian Slips is at the Queen's Arms Hotel in Wright Street tonight and Wednesday, Thursday and Friday next week.
